Dr. Mingming Tong is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the College of Science and Engineering of University of Galway. Following a BSc. in Physics from the Beijing Institute of Technology (1998), Dr. Tong was awarded the degree of D. Phil. (Materials Engineering) at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004 based on his research on computational modelling for solid state phase transformation of steels during hot rolling. The PhD project drew him to his particular research area of computational modelling of material processing. Between 2004 and 2016, he took employments at UCD and Imperial College London, conducting research on various topics. In late 2016, he started working at University of Galway as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering.
Dr Mingming Tong’s main research areas include metallurgy, computational modelling and materials processing. The main application areas include metal forming, welding, casting, atomisation, flotation, additive manufacturing and material recycling. His team is also actively taking part in the multi-disciplinary research of such as rewetting the peatlands of Ireland for responding to the global climate challenges, developing advanced photocatalysts for waste water treatments, and developing innovative software for bioinformatics. Besides making contribution to the body-of-knowledge, the research outcomes of related computational modelling activities are being used to create digital twins of advanced industrial processes, to mitigate the economic, technical and environmental challenges.
