Dr. Alessandra Mileo is Associate Professor in the School of Computing at Dublin City University. Besides being a Funded Investigator in I-Form, Dr. Mileo is also a Principal Investigator at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, co-leader for the Decision Making Research Challenge and DCU representative for the Non Exchequer-Non Commercial Funding task force. Dr. Mileo has secured almost 1 million euros in funding including national (SFI, IRC), international (EU, NSF) and industry-funded projects, publishing 90+ papers. Her research interest is in exploiting synergies and complementarities between symbolic, probabilistic and neural artificial intelligence. Dr. Mileo has recently designed a research programme on Knowledge-Informed Deep Representation Learning, aimed at improving explainability and knowledge transfer in Deep Learning applications. She holds an MSC (2002) and a PhD (2006) in Computer Science from the University of Milan, Italy.
Dr. Mileo leads a research group of 5 PhD students and 1 PostDoc. The research focus of the group is to provide machines with more robust and adaptive representation of the state of the world. This facilitates the design of algorithms that can learn how to perform new complex tasks faster and more effectively than ever before. To do that, we consider the way humans learn new concepts, which is by considering connections with what is already known, involving both cognitive (memory related) and neural (experience related) processes. Artificial Intelligence approaches such as Deep Learning rely on massive amounts of labelled data to learn. We focus on solutions that enhance Deep Learning with relevant knowledge and combine such knowledge with data to learn new tasks faster and better. A key outcome of such an approach is that it will improve explainability and reduce data bias, improving transparency and fairness.
