Celebrating Future Innovators in Kilkenny

At I-Form, we are committed to supporting the next generation of engineers, and we are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of future innovators in Ireland. The sixth-class students of Scoil Phádraig, Ballyhale, have won an award for their 3D-printed chair reinforcement design, a testament to their creativity and problem-solving skills. The students designed and printed a plastic reinforcement for the back of their classroom chairs, strengthening them and preventing cracks or breaks. The award was one of only two presented nationwide.
Celebrating with Industry Experts
To mark this fantastic milestone, I-Form EPE Manager Michael Golden, alongside PhD researchers Deeksha Hota and Ozgun Umut Tukac, visited Scoil Phádraig as part of the Taiscéalaí programme 2024/25.
Michael presented the award, which was 3D-printed at University College Dublin (UCD), and engaged the students in a series of exciting engineering discussions and hands-on challenges. Deeksha and Ozgun, both working on advanced titanium medical implants, shared insights into their PhD research, demonstrating how 3D printing is revolutionising medicine by creating stronger, more sustainable hip and knee replacements.
Hands-On Engineering Challenges
The visit also included a fun engineering task: students were given 30 minutes to build the tallest free-standing tower using only paper, tape, and scissors. The structures had to be strong enough to support a small yellow trophy. The challenge encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking—essential skills for future engineers. The students at Scoil Phádraig were enthusiaistic and eager to learn which is a brilliant example of how young minds can apply STEM principles to create meaningful solutions. We are proud to support such initiatives and look forward to seeing these students continue their journey in engineering and innovation.
