Donegal student wins Engineers Week design competition

I-Form is thrilled to announce the winners of its Engineers Week design competition for second-level students, run in partnership with Junior Cycle for Teachers – Technologies.

We received 131 entries from Junior Cycle students all around the country. Students were issued the challenge of “designing a new device or system that will enhance the day-to-day activities of a senior citizen”. They were asked to render the design in any CAD software such as Tinkercad or Solidworks.

The I-Form research team enjoyed the task of judging the entries – 16 volunteers scored the entries based on the criteria of design quality and fit, explanation and inspiration. The team were amazed at the high standard of entry and the ingenuity of the students, who displayed both creativity and enthusiasm for the challenge.

The winning entry was created by Patrick Gallagher, a student of Mr MacEoin in Loreto Community School, Milford, Donegal. His entry was titled ‘The Hug-Mug’ and aims to provide a safe hot beverage for anyone whose hands have a tremor. Patrick wins a 3D printer for his school and a voucher for himself.

We also had three runners up, who win vouchers for themselves:

  • Noah Farrelly from Mr McNamara’s class in Rosmini Community School – Smart Panic Button
  • Evan Wynne, from Mr Timmin’s class, Sutton Park – Elevating Chair
  • Lauren Coughlan, from Mr Donaldson’s class, Tallaght Community School – Modified Camera

Congratulations to all our winners!

The competition was run as part of I-Form’s ‘3D printing for teachers’ programme, in partnership with 3DWIT, and funded by the SFI Discover programme.
