Dr Cian Hughes is a postdoctoral researcher in the machine learning and data science area of I-Form, based in DCU. He was awarded a bachelor's degree in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Sciences before moving to more interdisciplinary work in advanced manufacturing. He completed his PhD on the topic of nanostructured biosensor development at DCU as part of an SFI funded project, and has since continued this pattern of varied interdisciplinary research. His work as part of I-Form has primarily focused on laser-based powder bed fusion and data analysis for the various advanced manufacturing techniques being developed throughout I-Form.
Research Interests (Lay Summary)
Advanced manufacturing processes generally involve techniques that require conditions to be just right to work. To ensure we can get these processes to work and keep them working, our manufacturing equipment produces huge amounts of detailed data. Dr Hughes is currently interested in ways to collect, analyse, and use all of this data to create and improve advanced manufacturing methods. This data can be used to gain insights into processes, optimise them, and create models that can predict and guide the development of even better processes. As part of his work in I-Form, Cian is currently developing AI models that can be used in advanced manufacturing processes to produce new and interesting materials that were previously not possible to produce.
Technical Summary
The big, multimodal data produced by advanced manufacturing techniques creates a wealth of opportunities for process improvement through the application of machine learning models. The research project is focused on the development of machine learning models capable of ingesting, interpreting, and rapidly processing these vast multimodal datasets to allow for in-situ process monitoring and advancements such as process quality recommendation and closed-loop control. If successful, these models would constitute valuable steps towards making additive manufacturing techniques robust, reliable and controllable, facilitating their rollout to wider industrial and technological applications.
