Developing an Experimental Demonstrator, along with Training Content on Industry 4.0
Challenge: The PERFORM project brings together partners from four countries across the EU, with the objective of developing an experimental demonstrator, along with training content on Industry 4.0.
In this consortium I-Form (UCD) is joined by Spain’s Mondragon Corporation, as well as the research institute Lortek (also of Spain), the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation, at the University of Patras (Greece) and Aalto University (Finland). This project is supported under the EU funded European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Manufacturing program.
Goal: The plan is to develop an Industry 4.0 training demonstrator, which combines four digital manufacturing technologies: Additive Manufacturing, the Internet of Things, Augmented Reality and the Digital Twin. This demonstrator along with the associated training program is designed to provide practical training for undergraduate students, along with those working in industry, on the use of these four digital manufacturing technologies.
Impact: The success of the PERFORM turbine training program was successfully demonstrated based on trainee surveys, after the program was taken by 110 undergraduate students, along with 28 industry trainees. The latter included trainees from 20 companies, based in both Ireland and Spain. The program was presented by the I-Form Director, Prof. Dowling at the World Manufacturing Forum in November 2020. The PERFORM project has also been selected as a ‘Success Story’, by EIT Manufacturing.
Duration: This is a one-year project and was completed in December 2020. The Industry 4.0 training programme that has been developed is currently being delivered both to industry trainees and undergraduate students.
Key Enabling Technologies: Additive Manufacturing (AM or 3D printing); Process and Product Modelling; Materials Characterisation; Data Analytics; Machine learning; Digital twin, Augmented Reality; Internet of Things
