Mahdieh Samimi is a PhD researcher working in the area of SLM metrology. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and master’s degree in Energy Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic, Iran. Her main research interests are in the areas of development of non-invasive techniques for selective laser melting (SLM) and additive manufacturing (AM) process monitoring.
Research Interests (Lay Summary)
Mahdieh started her PhD with I-Form in 2019 and is investigating non-invasive techniques for selective laser melting (SLM) and additive manufacturing (AM) process monitoring in the field of metrology. Metrology is essential for the monitoring of key process parameters and interpreting the effect of process performance on the manufactured component. The aim of metrology-based process monitoring is to establish correlations between the process data and final part performance (mechanical, morphology, etc).
During process interrogation, it is crucial to ensure that the process monitoring itself does not impact on the process parameters and ultimately the final component quality. Mahdieh is attempting to better detect process faults that impact product performance using non-invasive and non-destructive techniques.
The aim of Mahdieh’s work is to explore the application of a selection of techniques to monitor the process and component quality during selective laser melting (SLM). The aim of her work is to gain an understanding into which non-invasive techniques should be developed for SLM metrology.
SLM metrology is seen as a necessary method to develop real time process feedback and closed loop process control, and to increase quality assurance of AM parts in industry; however, not much is known about the application of these systems.
