Prof Fengzhou Fang is UCD’s SFI Research Professor for Precision Manufacturing. He has previously set up the MNMT advanced manufacturing research centre in China, which has been recognised as a leading research centre in micro/nano manufacturing. He has published over 300 papers in peer reviewed journals, along with 12 book chapters and over 50 patents, as well as accomplished more than 130 projects for industrial partners with applications in freeform optics/photonics, biomedical devices, mechanical systems and process monitoring. He is Editor-in-Chief of Nanomanufacturing and Metrology and the Founding President of the International Society for Nanomanufacturing. He served as a Council Member and the Chairman of Manufacturing Curriculum committee of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering and was awarded the prestigious Sargent Medal of the Society for Manufacturing Engineering for his scientific advances in manufacturing. He is a Fellow of ISNM, SME, AET, and CIRP.
The primary focus of Fengzhou’s research is on medical device and implant manufacturing due to the high level of Irish and European industrial interest in this sector. His research scope includes:
Micro/nano manufacturing - micro/nano features fabrication, fundamentals study, new process development, process monitoring and automation, measurement and evaluation, devices and equipment.
Biomedical device manufacturing - medical device development, medical implants machining, implant intraocular lens and contact lens manufacturing and measurement.
Optical freeform manufacturing - aspheric and freeform optical system design, machining and metrology.
Ultra-precision machining - machining fundamentals, process and instruments development, monitoring and metrology.
Precision manufacturing - machining process, monitoring and automation, measurement and evaluation.
